Use with CDN

Postby nburkley » Tue Dec 16, 2014 12:23 pm

Hi,

I'm looking at using WIT for a site that has a lot of users in South Africa, many of whom will be using feature phones.

As well as serving responsive images, we also want to ensure images are served quickly. Can WIT be used with a CDN? If so, how is this done?

Thanks,
Niall

Niall,

Are you able to provide me with the CDN that you are planning on using as well as the amount of traffic you are experiencing in this region?

Thank you,

Elliot

Hi Elliot,

We're still in the early stages but we'll probably be using Akamai as a CDN.

As for traffic - it's a new application so we're still unsure, initially, traffic would be quite low as we'll be starting with a soft launch.

Thanks,
Niall

Niall,

You are free to use WIT to re-size your images however, serving the re-sized images through your CDN will not be any more beneficial as they will not cache the responses received from WIT. Using a CDN in front of WIT may also cause issues with serving the correct image size, as the images are re-sized depending on the client's device screen size (depending on the directives you plan on using).

Feel free to use WIT directly for your application, as it will also cache the responses it receives from the original image host in order to achieve an optimal response time.

Thank you,

Elliot

Hi Elliot,

Thanks for the information. We'll put together a proof of concept and see how it goes.

Regards,
Niall
