Kindle

Postby indigoe » Sun Mar 04, 2012 11:16 pm

I was trying to look up some Kindle info in the database (db.scientiamobile.com) but the device seems to be missing.

Mozilla/5.0 (Linux; U; en-US) AppleWebKit/528.5+ (KHTML, like Gecko, Safari/528.5+) Version/4.0 Kindle/3.0 (screen 600x800; rotate)

Surprisingly it's detected correctly in the community version of the database (version 2.3) as amazon_kindle3_ver1.

The Kindle Fire does seem to be present on db.scientiamobile.com but it is detected incorrectly in the community version of the database (comes up as htc_001ht_ver1_suban23_01).

Mozilla/5.0 (Linux; U; Android 2.3.4; en-us; Kindle Fire Build/GINGERBREAD) AppleWebKit/533.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile Safari/533.1

Perhaps it's not the right place to ask this, but why is there this discrepancy between databases? What is the database version on db.scientiamobile.com? And is the most recent version of the database able to identify these devices correctly?

Hi Indigoe,

The WURFL DB user-agent search is for substring and exact matches only - it does not use the WURFL API (this is intentional). The Kindle you are looking for is amazon_kindle3_ver1 (here's a list of all the Kindles: https://db.scientiamobile.com/device/re ... nd=&model= )

The most recent version of the database is indeed able to properly detect the Kindle devices (Kindle Fire included).
Thanks,

Thanks for the quick response. Do you have a demo page for the API? I remember there used to be one before all the recent changes but could not find it any more. Also how can we access the up to date database? It seems the community version hasn't been updated since November 2011, is this correct?

Correct.

Commercial licensees have access to weekly repository updates from their customer vaults. Of course, this comes on top of the API licensing (i.e. no need to comply with AGPL and release the full source code of your web application).

We will be releasing a tool that exposes the latest and greatest WURFL in action soon.

Thank you

Luca
