Is there a formal definition as to how WURFL makes the determination of whether a device is a tablet or not? Is it based on marketing information or actual screen dimension? Thanks!

Hi,

is_tablet is set on a per-device basis based on marketing info and other available product information. The value of this field is always determined by a human. Although there is not a strict algorithm, generally devices that are primarily touchscreen-based, larger than 6", completely wireless, and running a mobile or tablet OS are considered tablets. A notable exception is the full version of Windows on a tablet, which is currently considered to be in the same class as a laptop.

In the case that you wanted to detect that someone is on a Windows tablet and not desktop, for example, HP Elitepad os 8, is there anything returned that would serve this purpose?

Hello,

Unfortunately, all Windows tablets that are running a desktop version of Windows will be identified as a desktop device thus causing them to return "false" for the capability "is_tablet". This is because a Windows desktop User Agent does not reveal the underlying hardware information.

Thank you,

Elliot
